On June 29, 2015, the Los Angeles Kings terminated his contract, which had $22M on five years remaining, for a material breach of his Standard Player's Contract after he was arrested at the US-Canada border for possession of oxycodone. The NHLPA files a grievance and on October 9, 2015, it was announced that a settlement had been reached with the team where he would be paid $10.5M over 17 years ($1.8M in 2015-16; $250,000 per year from 2016-17 to 2019-20; $700,000 in 2020-21; $900,000 in 2021-22 and 2022-23; $700,000 in 2023-24 and 2024-25; $600,000 per year from 2025-26 to 2028-29; $500,000 in 2029-30 and 2031-32; and $400,000 in 2031-32) and would become a free agent. On January 5, 2016, as a free agent, signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals for a $1M annual salary to be pro-rated to approximately $500,000 to finish the season. Earned his $1.8M settlement plus $500,000 salary. Retired as a pro-hockey player after the season. | |||
