RUSSIAN HIGHER LEAGUE TOURNAMENT STANDINGS
on February 4, 2001
The
first stage of the qualifying tournament for the right which will give
each of four top teams from the East and West divisions to fight for two
vacant places in the Superleague for 01/02 season is over. The best
chances to make the elite division of the Russian Superleague have Spartak
Moscow, Krylya Soviets Moscow and Sibir Novosibirsk.
Spartak
goes into the second stage of the tournament with a slogan, “All or
nothing!” That means if the club will not be among the two best teams
they will lose their sponsors and patrons who are a great support for them
this year. Youngster Ilya Kovalchuck will lead his team in the final
battle for the spot in the Superleague. At the moment he is indisputably
the best player on the team in all concerns such as goal scoring and
ability to urge on his teammates.
Krylia
Soviets also has good financial basis and their chances are very high.
Sibir
Novosibirsk is a powerful team but still nobody knows how it will look
against much stronger and more competitive teams of Division West.
Crystal
Saratov, Khimik Voskresensk, Energia Kemerovo and Traktor Chelyabinsk are
good but are not still ready to make Superleague for 01/02 season. If they
be lucky enough in it then their destiny is to become just victims of the
clubs like AkBars Kazan, Metallurg Magnotogorsk and Omsk Avangard. There
is no need to become points suppliers like SKA St. Petersburg and Vityaz
Podolsk have been in the Superleague so far this season.
