Canadian Midget Challenge Cup
The 1999 Russian Midget (Under-17) team governed by Vladimir Plyuschev won the
prestigious Challenge Cup Trophy which is held once every three years. This international
tournament is considered as the unofficial Midget (Under-17) Junior World Championships.
In the first round, Team Russia won first place in pool "A". 1)
Russia-West 3:2 (Kovalchuk, Trubachev, Chistov). 2) Finland-Russia 3:6 (Kovalchuk-3,
Mikhailov-3). 3) USA-Russia 4:4 (Trubachev, Kovalchuk, Yevseyev, Shishkanov). 4)
Russia-Quebec 7:3 (Minakov, Kovalchuk-2, Trubachev, Kaigorodov, Uchevatov, Minakov).
In the semifinals the Pacific Coast team was beaten by
the Russian juniors 7:5 (Trubachev-2, Frantsuzov, Kovalchuk-3, Kaigorodov).
In the final the Ontario team was beaten by Russia 2:0. Goals were scored by Chistov,
Minakov.
Ilya Kovalchuk, the representative of Spartak Moscow, was named as the best
player of the tournament. He chipped in a fantastic 14 points (10 goals+4 assists) in six
games. He had goals in five consecutive games, resulting in a record with 2 hat-tricks and
10 goals as a result.
He garnered the attention of many hockey observers and analysts who say,
"He could become the all-time leading Russian scorer if this young gifted offensive
player with mercurial speed makes the most of his skills and gives no indication of
slowing down."
Moreover, everyone was so impressed by his play that they demanded that his
hockey stick be placed it in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. This happened for the
first time in the history of world hockey!!!
