3 Years GoalieMania NHL Ranking
2000-2001 to 2002-2003

For the second year in a row, GoaliMania tallied up the rankings of the last 3 seasons to see which goaltenders was outplaying the others during this time. Also, by comparing each goalie result for each year, we look at the consistency of the netminders.

Right off the bat, we must say that this ranking has a weakness: a goalie that did not play a lot in one of the last 3 seasons is penalized because that season is weighed at 33% of the final score. Keeping that in mind, the ranking remains interesting as it gives a good idea of who were the best during that period. Later this season, we will publish a comprehensive long term ranking that will be based on the overall long term stats of each goalie.

As we said last year :«If he play another great season, he could be number one next year.» Roman Cechmanek wins the first place. Some may be surprised but you have to keep in mind that behind the bad publicity that Cechmanek received from the medias, he’s a great goaltender… not really a traditional one but a very effective one. Cechmanek also comes third when it comes to consistency. The Kings have nothing to worry about with their new number one goalie.

Consistency-wise, Roberto Luongo comes first (excluding Jani Hurme). He stayed in the top 10 for the 3 years and he should be considered for a Vezina trophy soon. After all, we saw last year that you don’t have to be incredible in a season to win the trophy if you have constant performance in a long run… and a good reputation.

In addition to Cechmanek, some other goaltenders climbed in the ranking ; JS Giguère (34th to 8 th), Evgeni Nabokov (26th to 7th) et Patrick Lalime (19th to 11th). Finally, for next year, the following goalies are going to make a good jump in this ranking : Marty Turco, Nikolai Khabibulin, Marc Denis, Martin Biron and Johan Hedberg.
