As the now defunct World Hockey Association was trying to compete with the National Hockey
League, Robert Picard, a promising young defenseman who had been the Washington Capitals
1st draft pick, signed a 5-year $125,000 per season contract with the Québec Nordiques of
the WHA. This despite having signed an agreement with the Capitals."I'd rather deliver pizzas in Québec City than play for the Washington
Capitals. "
-- Robert Picard, September 12, 1977
Eleven days later, the president of the WHA judged the contract with the
Nordiques invalid and Picard joined Washington where he started his 13-year NHL career
with Washington (3 seasons), Toronto, Montréal, Winnipeg, Québec and Detroit. |
