| The average salary of NHL coaches has increased only
4% in 1999-00 while it went up 27% and 21% during the previous 2 seasons while the
players' salaries (top 300 salaries) only (!) went up 12%, 17% and 18%. The
average salary of the 300 best-paid NHLers was 3.5 times higher than the coaches' average
in 1998-99.
In 1991-92, one of the top-earning NHL coaches (Pat Burns) was earning what the
20th best-paid coach (out of 26) was earning in 1987-98 ($300,000).
An interesting note: the Atlanta Flames' coach, Bernard Geoffrion, was earning
$27,000 in 1972-73. One of his players, Pat Quinn, became the first coach to break the
million dollar mark with a $1.1M salary in 1998-99. |
