The average salary of NHL coaches has increased only 4% in 1999-00 while it went up 27% and 21% during the previous 2 seasons while the players' salaries (top 300 salaries) only (!) went up 12%, 17% and 18%.

The average salary of the 300 best-paid NHLers was 3.5 times higher than the coaches' average in 1998-99.

In 1991-92, one of the top-earning NHL coaches (Pat Burns) was earning what the 20th best-paid coach (out of 26) was earning in 1987-98 ($300,000).

An interesting note: the Atlanta Flames' coach, Bernard Geoffrion, was earning $27,000 in 1972-73. One of his players, Pat Quinn, became the first coach to break the million dollar mark with a $1.1M salary in 1998-99.
